How to Spot a Liar

For the next couple of class periods, we are going to experiment with writing on this blog.  I've chosen some interesting TED talks to get us started.  Please watch the following YouTube video which is Pamela Meyer's TED Talk on ways to spot a liar.

As you watch take notes and be prepared to develop a 300 word (or more) response to her talk.
Keep in mind some of these guiding questions:

  • What is Meyer's argument about lying?
  • What are her numbered truths? Explain in your own words what each one means.
  • Did this TED talk make you think differently about lying?
  • If so, how?  Explain your biggest takeaway.
  • Do you have any unanswered questions about lying?  If so, what are they?
  • Do you lie on a daily basis?  If so, what are some of the lies you tell.

  1. .1 Meyer’s argument is that lying takes 2 people for it to become powerful, without the person who lies and the person who believes the lie the lie means nothing if the person doesn’t believe it, she also says that when we lie we try to connect what we’re hungry for and want so that’s why its best to know what you want
2 Truth 1 Lying is a cooperative act Truth 2 we are against lying and covertly for it Truth 3 people lie to connect with their wants I didn’t realize that were lying as much as they are you’d think there would be a couple good people but in a way we’re all terrible people
3 This TED talk didn’t make me think differently about lying whatsoever.
4 I’m not changing or editing myself for anyone by any means
5 I do not have any unanswered questions about lying what so ever I understand it completely
6 I probably lie on a daily basis I don’t keep track on how much I do but I know I lie sometimes. Things I may lie about are “I have no homework”, or “you look nice”. I’ll lie sometimes just to make that person happy even if I don’t think that thing whatsoever I’ll lie it doesn’t effect me at all I’m not changing I'm staying the same

  2. Meyer’s argument about lying is that when someone lies you can see right through them, everyone has something to lie about and you might not know it but you are getting lied to everyday. Meyer’s first numbered truth is lying is a cooperative act, you are lied to because you believed their small lie. The second numbered truth is that people are against lying, people are against it but they are continuously lying to people and the smarter you are the more you lie to others. Also body language is a big part of lying if you are lying people can detect it by the way you are looking, smiling, and even the way you are standing. By showing that you don’t care or that you are not sure what you are talking about then that shows from your body language. Yes this ted talk made me feel differently about people lying because now I know what to look for in a person if I think they are lying to me. My biggest take away is that it is so easy to detect that someone is lying just by the way they are looking at you. No I do not have any unanswered questions about lying, Meyer explained very well how to be a lie spotter. I may say little lies to people but nothing major.

  3. Meyer’s argument about lying is that people lie all the time and can be trying to hide it. Her numbered truths are lying is a cooperative act, speech, body language, and duping delight. Lying takes two or more people to happen. People lie to others and without another person going along with it, then it would not work. Speech is when the way you talk is altered to make yourself more believable. Body langauge is changed because you might be tense trying to convince someone of your lie. Duping delight is basically when you try to convince someone of your lie, but accidentally slipping up and showing happiness or delight. No, this TED talk did not make me think differently about lying. However, I did learn many ways to tell how someone is lying. I would like to know why people lie so many times a day. Also, how do people learn all the ways to tell someone is lying? People sometimes just slip up with facial expressions and could not be lying. I lie sometimes, but not usually on a daily basis. Usually the lies I tell are not harmful they are just small lies simply to avoid a long conversation about the truth.

    1. I thought that thing called Duping Delight was weird. Do you think people really smile like that when they are lying?

  4. She stated how everyone is a liar. People get lied to everyday and even we lie everyday which is true. She also states how there is an art to lying and there is either good or bad liars. She also talks about how it’s a normal thing and explains how to tell if someone is lying. The first numbered truth is lying is a cooperative act, which means there is someone else involved in the lie. The second one is we are against lying yet we do it all the time, which means we don’t like when people lie to us, yet we lie to others all the time. Which kinda makes us hypocrites since we dislike something people do yet we do it ourselves on a daily basis . Yes, this ted talk made me realize that anyone could be lying about anything and that it’s hard to trust people. Mostly when she said that we get lied to 10-200 times a day surprised me. Also when she said that most of the time, strangers we meet lie about almost everything and that teenagers lie to their parents in most conversations. It’s a strange thing on how lying is such a normal thing and even babies lie. I do not have any unanswered questions about lying. Yes, I lie every day, mostly when people ask if I am okay and I say I am when I am really not. I even notice that i am lying but I do it anyway so I don’t annoy people. I can’t remember other lies I tell but I know they aren’t bad because I don’t enjoy lying even if I do it a lot.

  5. Meyer’s argument about lying was about how to spot a liar and how to find the truth through the lies. How everyone lies and it’s a common thing. Also what people do and say while they are lying. Showing that it’s easy to spot a fake smile or know when someone is lying. That their gestures and movement are hints that people are lying. Seeing the difference between real emotions and fake ones. The truths were lying is a cooperative act and we are against lying. Lying is a cooperative act means that lying is done together. Sometimes people let themselves get lied to. We are against lying means that we hate lying but we do it anyways. Everyone hates liars but we are the liars, and they will never change. This TED talk actually did make me think differently about lying. I will now know when someone is fake smiling at me, and when someone is lying to me. I will listen and look more carefully to their words and their body language. I don’t have any questions in my mind right now about this subject about lying. I do lie on a daily basis, just like everyone else. Some lies that I tell everyday are “how was school” and I’ll say “good”. Also when I started a fight with my brothers I’ll say that my little brother started it. But I don’t lie to my friends, only my family and everyone else I lie to, which is not good.

  6. In this video, Pamela Meyers explains how lies are both not wrong but wrong in totally different. there are white, harmless lies and there are deadly lies or dangerous lies. lies that actually could harm someone or not as dangerous lies that only diverge a certain person from the truth. Pamela has about two numbered truths that she says in this video, truth number one is: lying is a cooperative act. it takes two or more people to actually believe in a certain person’s lie in order to go on with it. truth number two is: we are against lying and covertly for it. By this, Pamela means that people who lie are naturally against people who lie to them but they lie to other people in order to either make them feel better or buy some time for a certain thing, which is called stalling. This TED absolutely made me think differently about lying, maybe i’ll stop lying as frequently as usual. for me, my biggest take away to see if someone lying is when they look my in the eyes and suddenly get very defensive or the easiest way to tell if someone is lying to me is when they suddenly grin or chuckle or even laugh after they tell the lie. I do not have any unanswered questions about lying. (this is adam btw)

  7. Meyer’s argument is that lying takes 2 people for a lie to become powerful , without the person who lies and the person who believes the lie a lie means nothing if the other person doesn’t believe it, she also says that when we lie we try to connect what ere hungry for and want so that’s why its best to know what you want. Truth 1 , lying is a cooperative act Truth 2 we are against lying and covertly for it Truth 3 people lie to connect with their wants. I didn’t realize that people werfe lying so much and the real reasons why people lie. My biggest takeaways is to try to lie less because everyone lies so much already that we need should try to make our lives more honest. Is it ok to lie if your trying to save someones feelings from getting hurt or is lying in general bad no matter what you lie about and how you do it. I probably lie on a daily bases but I don’t realize it but I don’t think I usually don’t say any big lies there mostly smalll lies like ‘’ I don’t have an extra piece of gum’’ or I don’t have any paper because im to lazy to open my bag and get some paper for them, but I think its good to lie sometimes if your always telling the truth your most likey going to be hurting peoples feelings all the time and then your going to be hated by allot of people. So I think its good to lie to save peoples feelings from being hurt. Like if your friend ask you if his outfit looks good and you say yes but in your head your actually thinking ‘’ wow he should probably put something else on’’.

  8. Myers argument about lying is that everyone lies, and even if you do not want to you still do it by accident, but some people do it on purpose. People lie to make things seem good when they are not.
Her first numbered truth means how many things you say in a day that are true. The second part of her numbered truths are how many times on a daily basis you lie either by accident or not.
Yes, her TED talk did make me think different about lying. It made me think that everyone lies even if they say they don’t they still do. Lying can affect many things whether good or bad. For example the government can lie and it can be good or bad.
My biggest take away for the TED talk video was that everyone lies either by accident or on purpose. Some people lie to make it seem like their lives are great when it’s really not. People’s lives could be horrible and they could lie to make it seem like it is great.
No I do not have any unanswered questions about lying.
I try not to lie a lot and I do not really lie that much. If I do lie i tell a little lie not a big one.

  9. You can tell if someone is lying, by there actions and there hand movements and facial expressions. First numbered truth is a cooperative act. Its easy to spot a fake smile and their gestures and movements. You see the difference between real emotions and fake emotions. She is against lying but not everybody is against lying. Lying is done together, it takes two people to lie. We hate to lie but we do it anyways because sometimes lying is the easy way out. We hate liars, but we are hypocrites. We can tell by everybodys body language when they lie. Sometimes we lie because we don’t want to hurt peoples feelings. Lying helps , but its not a good thing. People get lied to everyday , maybe even for the littlest things and the stupid reasons. We don’t know why we lie sometimes it just comes out our mouth. We sometimes cannot control it. Its like our ego wants us to lie and we cant do anything about it . Its pretty sad that we lie so often that it became an everyday thing. Easy to lie and easy to be spotted that you lied. Sometimes things can change.

  10. Pamela Meyer's talk above about the science of "lie spotting" and how it can lead to a better and more honest world. She talks about how everyone lies. Even if you don't mean to everyone does. She also talk about ways to spot if someone is lying or not.
The first numbered truth is how many times you tell the truth everyday. The second is how many times you lie even if you don't mean to and it just happens.
This TED talk did make me think differently about lying. It made me realize how easy it is to create a lie. I realized how easy it is to lie to someone and feeling no regret it's actually quite sad. After listening to this I want to try and not ie as much even if their tiny white lies like yes I did the dishes. After this video i would like to stop lying and just come out and say if I did or did not do something.
I don't have any unanswered questions except one. Why does lying come so easy to most of us others it doesn't but to some it does. I have this friend and she's the worst at lying so we always know if she is or isn't but when i lie no one has a clue which i guess could be bad or good. But in general I would like to know why people lie in the first place.
I do lie daily. I just told my mom when i get home i'll do the dishes but I know I won't and i'll wait until tonight. I just say it to sound better but in general I do lie.

  11. meyer’s argument about lying is that we all lie we could be lying to the person that is sitting next to us this very moment. one of her truth is that Lying is a cooperative act. Think about it, a lie has no power whatsoever. Its power emerges when someone else agrees to believe the lie.We sometimes agree to get lied to we just don't notice. We're against lying, but we're covertly for it in ways that our society has sanctioned for centuries and centuries and centuries for example about the gorilla koko she blamed the sink accident on the cat .The third one is that we can lie by using are face expressions and are hands like for example the president and the first lady were at a party and some almost touched her so he grab his and but still had a smiling face. It made me think about all the lies that i have told and it made me change i think i shouldn't tell as much lies as i do.I do lie in a daily bases which i probably shouldn't be doing.I usually lie about how i'm feeling and i sometimes lie to my parents because i actually don't know why i just lie.

  12. Meyer’s argument is that lying takes two people for a lie to become powerful and the person being lied to is part of it for eblieving the lie itself. she says that when someone lies we try to connect what were hungry for and want so that is why it’s best to know what you want. Truth 1: lying is a cooperative act between two or more people Truth 2: most people are against lying but covertly for it Truth 3: people lie to connect with their wants and needs. I didn’t realize that people lie so much and what the real reasons are for why we lie. The biggest takeaways for me from this video are that we need to try and lie either a little or a lot less because everyone lies and we need to try to make our lives a little more honest because honesty will get us farther in life. I do not have any questions about this TED talk and it did not make me think or feel any differently about lying. I am still going to do it and so is everyone else who heard her speak or saw the video. Yes, I can say that I do lie on a daily basis. Some may be little shitw lies or some may be big but they are not to hurt anyone or get anyone in or out of trouble. My small white lies are usually “I left my homework in my locker” or “I left my homework at home” or if someone asks me a question and I do not like them I say I do not know the answer to it even if I do or can find out for them I lie. But the main point is, everyone lies and there is no way to stop lying or get out of someone lying to you, it is life, get over it!

2 Truth one Lying is a cooperative act Truth two we are against lying and covertly for it Truth three people lie to connect with their wants I didn’t realize that were lying as much as they are you’d think there would be a couple good people but in a way we’re all terrible people
3 it made me realize how lying is bad
4 I will not change my self
5 I do not have really had any questions left on this
6 I lie allot but I’m not a good at lying at all I laugh and smile when I tell a lie it can be like a really important lie that will get me in trouble if they knew the truth and I will smile about it.

  14. Meyers argument about lying is that lying takes two people and who ever is being lied to lets them self be lied to. People are against ling, however everyone does it. Ling is apart of human nature and has been around since the beginning of time. Yes, the Ted talk did make me feel different about lying. This is because knowing the ling is apart of human nature makes me feel different on telling a little white lie. Yes, I do have some unanswered questions about ling. What if someone is showing all the characteristics of ling but is really telling the truth in the end? Was it the person's fault for not picking up on the clues or just a rare coincidence? No, I do not lie on a daily basis, however I will tell little white lies from time to time.

  15. Pamela Meyer's talks about the art of "lie spotting" and how it can lead to a more positive and honest lifestyle for everyone, especially yourself. She is saying that when someone tells a lie, we as people tend believe what we are told because you want to believe it.
Truth 1: Lying is an act that only needs one person to tell a dishonest statement to someone.
Truth 2: A majority of people lie but are against lying and says it’s wrong, even though most people do it.
Truth 3: Many people will lie to try and obtain their wants and needs.
I’ve always knew people lied, whether it be about something serious or something not so serious. This video taught me not to trust anyone because you never know what they may be lying or telling the truth about. Trust is as thin as air. I do not have any questions about this TED talk and it did not make me think or feel any differently about lying. I am sticking to my faithful and honest ways no matter what society turn to. People will continue to lie and no matter how filthy society as a whole may become I will not sink to the level of other people. If I believe in something, I will simply say it whether you hate, or love what I have to say. The reason for this is because I can care less about what people think. I will be me until the day I die and if you don’t like it then you can step out of my life. Nobody will faze me for I am omnipotent for it is my life and I have the ability to control a plethora of things around me if I put my mind to it.

  16. Meyer’s argument about lying is that lying is a cooperate act and it only has power when the participant agrees to be lied to. Her numbered truths are that most people are against lying however, they are unaware of how often they participate in the act of being dishonest, as a way of making themselves appears more powerful. This TED made me realize that lying is part of human nature, and there are many different, more precise ways to spot a liar, other than the lack of eye contact, fidgeting, etc. After watching this video, I do not believe I have any unanswered questions about lying. On a daily basis, I would not say I lie. However, I have to admit that I can tell a few white lies throughout the weeks. Many of these lies include “Oh no sorry, I didn’t get your text because I was sleeping,” or “I had studied so hard for that history test,” when really I had only studied for twenty minutes.
